RAF Holmpton

As it appeared in 1974

As a fully operational radar station

RAF Holmpton is situated near Withersea in East Yorkshire.  It is a two storey building, seventy-five feet below ground, built specifically in response to the Cold War and was an operational Early Warning Radar Station from 1953.
In it's past it has also been a training centre and Emergency War HQ.  Now it is a Preserved Heritage Centre with guided tours, showing the general public how it was in it's glorious past.
An investigation took place on the 14th February, 2009, consisting of team members only.
I did not know that our hub for the evening was anything other than a visitor centre at the entrance to the building.  However when I complained to James, our host, that I had a feeling of being falling down drunk, he then nformed me that that area used to be the Guard Room, and it was not unknown for people to have a drunk feeling in this area.  The spirit was also intent on showing me the arm on a very dark uniform, showing Royal Observer Corps and then an insignia I had never seen before.  See photo below.  It was quite a surprise for me, because I hadn't realised there would have been any other personnel in the building other than RAF!
After protection we made our way downstairs into the 130+ yard access tunnel.  An officious sounding man made his presence felt straight away, wanting to know what our business was in this area.  We were rewarded with a light across the right wall, within the first second of recording.  See clip 1 below.

This is the nearest I could find

First trip

Our first stop was the former Operations Room, now an Audotorium, and the place seemed to be buzzing with energy.  Lila said she felt very excited and quite quickly after I made contact with a spirit I can only call a Billy Bunter lookalike, very rotund, wearing the same type of black rimmed spectacles.  He was showing me a snapshot of a group outside the building with himself stood off to one side.  When I asked for his name, his relpy was Charlesworth, but he gave no first name.  He did, however give a date, 3rd May, 1962, but not the significance of it.  We cannot find any written eveidence as to it's meaning, so it may have been personal, rather than to do with the building.
In the vacinity of his energy came a lot blurring on the camera, plus the area appeared very cool in relation to the rest of the room.
A woman also made herself known, and I did say that I thought I could hear a woman's voice, albeit very faint.  When reviewing the tapes we came across this - click on box below to hear the faint voice of a woman, seemingly saying 'oooo'.

The same voice was heard again by Julie a short time later, while me and Dave joined her in having a very itchy face.  At the same time a light was caught on camera, (see below).  It was then that we heard two things that we did not expect.  Paul and I heard a group of people talking very faintly, whilst Julie, in the corner by the alert board, could hear music.  She thought it sounded like a party with old type music, but she couldn't be sure.
The only thing I saw at that time was a man in a full flying suit stood in the corner by the alert board.  He didn't move, nor did he say anything, but he was to make his presence felt later.
As Andrea and I were beginning to feel very cold and she had heard a noise in the corridor we decided to move location.

The first visit to the hospital, where I must admit everyone seemed a little jumpy, brought forth the spirit of an older lady, a former nurse who gave her name as,  I thought Margery, Lila thought Margaret, which proved to be correct according to James.  She seemed a very happy soul, but very concerned about the welfare of a younger lady ( Dorothy ), who had been treated very badly by the authorities and had succomed in an accident, falling down the stairs.  According to James, there is some suspicion over the death, a case of did she fall or was she pushed, but apparently the fact is weighing very heavily on this lady's mind.
As Lila and Andrea were complaining of an injury in the neck area, ( the fall perhaps!), Andrew was hearing noises in the corner of the room, like boxes being moved across the floor.  Paul became panicky as he heard a door slamming shut, because we were all together, and Dave came up with a name Roger Taylor (!!??) which spooked him no end, because Dave doesn't do psychic!!  A later visit was planned.

The Royal Observer Corps room had a completely different atmosphere to anywhere else in the building.  It was a very cold room, for no obvious reason, and the atmosphere seemed darker and heavy.  The man from the entrance hall put in an appearance again and several lights were caught on video.  See clip below.

It was then that Julie thought she had seen a light, although at the time it was dismissed as being from another area.  However, on viewing the tapes, it does show one in the room at the time - see below, 4.  We had another light too, whilst I was describing the insignia on the sleeve of the man from the entrance hall - below 5.

The cinema proved to be a very strange place, with an odd kind of energy.  From the beginning I could not see it as a cinema, but as some kind of lounge, which, when checking with James, is what it had been.  Along with unexplained blurring on the camera came the sound of a party in the distance, heard by Emma, Paul and Lila.  Other than a very faint light caught on camera, nothing else was captured.  By far the strangeset thing that happened in that room, was the vibrating and movement of my wheelchair, which couldn't be explained by anybody!  It will be an area we will be concentrating on at our next visit.
Before our break we had brief visits to the Viewing Gallery, which gave up the spirit of a man who had died from a heart attack, who still continued to rush towards the stairs and back.  Then the dormitory briefly, where, along with the blurring of the camera, we captured these lights on video, see below.

By far the strangest hour of the whole night took place on our second visit to the Auditorium/Ops room.  Every couple of minutes somebody wa reporting some strange happenings.  The man in the flying suit was now hurrying around the room creating a very strong energy, which surprisingly, seemed to be being picked up by David.  He began stomping around the room, appearing to be in a very bad mood, and even gave his camera to Andrew.  He began verbally abusing his torch, (can't use his actual words!) and was generally irritated by what everyone was doing and saying.  To say this is not like him is an understatement, and the room had not had this effect on him previously.

The whole time we were in this area, the man in the flying suit gave up no information, just continued to move around the room.  However, a lady spirit associated with the ops table was, in the beginning, more helpful.  While Andrea filmed down in the pit where the table was situated, I asked questions from above.  She confirmed that she was associated with the table, and began talking about a 'rota'.  I thought something had occured on her shift, when Julie, over the other side of the room, began reading some information about 'ROTOR', a decription of the make-up of the bunker and it's function!! During a glass session in the pit, the lady did make some comment about somebody blowing the whistle about an incident in 1963, but the longer the session went on, the more bizzare the answers became.  We cannot confirm an incident in 1963, nor are we likely to be able to.

The return visit to the hospital brought us again in contact with Margaret, the older nurse.  I began to try and get some information about her, whether she worked for the MOD or Queen Alexandra's Nursing Corps, and, although we were getting small lights, they were coming in the middle of the questions.
Then came a bizzare sequence - click on the box below, and apologies for the language!

The Warhead Room
P2150284.JPG

One room I had not been looking forward to returnng to was the one containing the nuclear warhead.  My first visit was upsetting, finding the energy very oppressive.  I had a brief glimpse of a large man, a hook and a rope and a tightness in my chest and around my throat.
On the second visit I tried to get some kind of explanation from the man, but only saw the same things over and over again.  There were comments from the rest of the group about cold spots and feeling unwell, and Andrea and Emma could both smell something strange, but neither could say what it was.  Obviously something unique to that place.
The man did show images of pills, and a woman, so I naturally assumed there had been a suicide.  Actually what had happened, according to the curator, was the man had suffered a heart attack, but because he was very large had had to be winched by rope from the room.  That will teach me not to jump to conclusions!  We did, however, catch this light during a Q and A session.

The other notable area of the night was a small area just to the side of the viewing gallery, again, housing the victim of a heart attack.  This man had a very busy energy, rushing backwards and forwards from the room, heading towards the stairs.  Several people, including the cameramen, thought they could hear talking in this area.  The energy appeared to make everyone jumpy.  People were feeling physical effects, especially cobwebs.  Paul was telling David how itchy his face was feeling when this light appeared on camera, (first clip below) and then a few seconds later I had the same feeling, (second clip).

The next incident involved a tugging on the bottom of my trousers and although we didn't get the movement of the material we did get a light, see clip below.

RAF Holmpton, I'm sure, has a lot more to offer, but, as sometimes happens, one night is not enough!  Because of this, we shall be returning later in the year.

Many thanks to James, our host, who mas a mine of information and very obliging.  It will be a pleasure to return to this wonderful place.
